A number is an idea that represents a quantity or amount. A numeral is the written symbol used to represent that number, and a digit is any single symbol (0–9) used to build numerals.

A number is an abstract mathematical concept denoting quantity, order, or measurement. A numeral is a specific notation or written representation of a number (such as "7", "seven", or "VII"). A digit is one of the ten symbols in the base-ten system — 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 — that are combined to form numerals.

How It Works

Think of the relationship like this: a number is an idea in your head (the concept of "threeness"), a numeral is how you write it down ("3", "three", or "III"), and digits are the building blocks you use to write numerals. The numeral 528 uses three digits: 5, 2, and 8. Just as letters make up words, digits make up numerals, and numerals represent numbers. This distinction matters when you talk about place value, since each digit's position in a numeral tells you how much it contributes to the number's total value.

Problem: Identify the number, numeral, and digits for the quantity of days in a year (three hundred sixty-five).
Number: The number is the abstract idea of the quantity three hundred sixty-five. It exists whether you write it down or not.
Numeral: The numeral is the written form you choose. In our usual Hindu-Arabic system, you write it as 365. In Roman numerals, you would write CCCLXV. Both are different numerals for the same number.
Digits: The numeral 365 is made up of three digits: 3, 6, and 5. The digit 3 is in the hundreds place, the digit 6 is in the tens place, and the digit 5 is in the ones place.
Answer: The number is the concept of three hundred sixty-five. The numeral "365" represents it in writing. The digits used are 3, 6, and 5.

Another Example

Problem: How many digits does the numeral 40,007 have, and what number does it represent?
Count the digits: Write out each individual symbol: 4, 0, 0, 0, 7. That gives five digits.
Identify the number: The numeral 40,007 represents the number forty thousand seven. The three 0 digits are placeholders showing that the thousands, hundreds, and tens places are empty.
Answer: The numeral 40,007 has 5 digits and represents the number forty thousand seven.

Why It Matters

Understanding the difference between numbers, numerals, and digits is foundational for learning place value, which is a core topic throughout elementary math. When teachers ask "What digit is in the hundreds place?" they expect you to name one symbol, not the whole numeral. This vocabulary also prepares you for later courses where different numeral systems appear, such as binary in computer science or Roman numerals in history.

Common Mistakes

Mistake: Saying a number like 365 "has three numbers in it."
Correction: 365 is one number. It has three digits (3, 6, and 5). Digits are the individual symbols; the number is the whole quantity.
Mistake: Thinking there are more than ten digits.
Correction: In the base-ten system, there are exactly ten digits: 0 through 9. Larger values like 12 or 99 are numerals made from two digits, not single digits themselves.
