Counting Names to 100 — Definition, Formula & Examples

Counting names to 100 are the English words used to represent each number from 1 (one) through 100 (one hundred). Learning these names helps you read, write, and say numbers correctly.

The number names from 1 to 100 form a systematic naming convention in which unique words exist for 1–20, the tens (30, 40, … 90), and 100, while all other two-digit numbers are formed by combining a tens-name with a ones-name (e.g., "forty-two" for 42).

How It Works

Numbers 1 through 12 each have a unique name you must memorize: one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve. From 13 to 19, names end in "-teen" (thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, sixteen, seventeen, eighteen, nineteen). The tens—twenty, thirty, forty, fifty, sixty, seventy, eighty, ninety—also need memorizing. For any number in between, combine the tens-name with the ones-name using a hyphen: twenty-one, thirty-five, sixty-eight, and so on. The number 100 is called "one hundred."

Worked Example

Problem: Write the number name for 76.
Step 1: Identify the tens digit. The tens digit is 7, which gives us "seventy."
Step 2: Identify the ones digit. The ones digit is 6, which gives us "six."
Step 3: Combine them with a hyphen.
Answer: 76 is written as "seventy-six."

Why It Matters

Reading number names is required on early math tests and standardized assessments. It also builds the foundation for writing checks, reading addresses, and understanding place value when you move on to larger numbers.

Common Mistakes

Mistake: Spelling "forty" as "fourty."
Correction: Unlike "four" and "fourteen," the correct spelling drops the 'u': forty.
