Treatment Group — Definition, Formula & Examples
A treatment group is the set of experimental units that receives the specific condition, intervention, or factor whose effect the researcher wants to measure. Comparing the treatment group's outcomes to those of a control group reveals whether the treatment had an effect.
In a controlled experiment, the treatment group consists of subjects to whom one or more levels of the explanatory variable (the treatment) are deliberately applied, so that any resulting change in the response variable can be attributed to the treatment rather than to confounding factors.
How It Works
Researchers begin by randomly assigning subjects to either a treatment group or a control group. The treatment group receives the experimental intervention—such as a new drug, teaching method, or fertilizer—while the control group does not (or receives a placebo). After the experiment, the researcher measures the response variable for both groups and compares results, typically using a hypothesis test. If the difference is statistically significant, the researcher concludes that the treatment likely caused the observed effect.

Problem: A researcher wants to test whether a new tutoring program improves exam scores. She randomly assigns 40 students to a treatment group (tutoring program) and 40 students to a control group (no tutoring). Why It Matters

Common Mistakes
Mistake: Confusing the treatment group with the control group when a placebo is involved.
Correction: The treatment group receives the actual intervention (e.g., the real drug). The control group receives the placebo or no intervention. A placebo is not a treatment—it exists to account for the placebo effect.
