Tape diagrams work for simple problems like "Sam has 12 apples and gives away 5" and for harder problems involving fractions or comparing two quantities.

Draw the tape: Draw one long rectangle and label the whole bar 24, since that is the total number of flowers.
Split it into parts: Divide the rectangle into two sections. Label the first section 10 (flowers given to mom). Label the second section with a question mark (flowers Mia kept).
Write the equation: The diagram shows that the two parts add up to the whole.
