Plot means to mark a point or piece of data in its correct position on a graph, grid, or number line. When you plot, you are placing information visually so it is easier to read and understand.
To plot is to represent a numerical value or ordered pair as a point at the corresponding location on a number line, coordinate plane, or other graphical display.
How It Works
To plot a point on a coordinate grid, start at the origin where the two axes cross. Move right or left along the horizontal axis to match the first number, then move up or down to match the second number. Place a dot where you land. On a number line, you simply find the correct value and mark it. Once all your points are plotted, you can see patterns, compare values, or draw a line through the data.
Worked Example
Problem: Plot the point (3, 5) on a coordinate grid.
Step 1: Start at the origin (0, 0).
Step 2: Move 3 units to the right along the horizontal axis.
Step 3: From there, move 5 units up along the vertical axis and place a dot.
Answer: The point (3, 5) is located 3 units right and 5 units up from the origin.
