Place Value Chart — Definition, Formula & Examples

A place value chart is a table that organizes digits into columns so you can see the value each digit represents based on its position in a number. Each column is labeled with a place name — ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, and so on — making it easy to read, write, and compare numbers.

A place value chart is a structured grid in which columns represent successive powers of ten (or, for decimals, negative powers of ten). A digit placed in a given column has the value equal to the digit multiplied by the power of ten assigned to that column. The chart provides a visual framework for decomposing any whole number or decimal into the sum of the values contributed by each of its digits.

How It Works

To use a place value chart, write one digit in each column starting from the right. The rightmost column is always the ones place. Each column to the left is worth ten times more than the column before it: ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten thousands, hundred thousands, millions. When you place a digit in a column, its value equals the digit times the column's value. For example, the digit 5 in the thousands column represents 5,000. You can also extend the chart to the right of the decimal point for tenths, hundredths, and thousandths.

Worked Example

Problem: Place the number 36,407 into a place value chart and find the value of each digit.
Step 1: Set up columns for ten thousands, thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones.
Step 2: Write each digit in its column from left to right: 3 in ten thousands, 6 in thousands, 4 in hundreds, 0 in tens, 7 in ones.
Step 3: Multiply each digit by its column value to find its place value.
3×10,000=30,0003 \times 10{,}000 = 30{,}000
Step 4: Continue for all digits: 6 × 1,000 = 6,000; 4 × 100 = 400; 0 × 10 = 0; 7 × 1 = 7. Check by adding the values.
30,000+6,000+400+0+7=36,40730{,}000 + 6{,}000 + 400 + 0 + 7 = 36{,}407
Answer: In 36,407 the digit 3 has a value of 30,000, the digit 6 has a value of 6,000, the digit 4 has a value of 400, the digit 0 has a value of 0, and the digit 7 has a value of 7.

Another Example

Problem: Use a place value chart to compare the value of the digit 4 in 4,523 and in 849.
Step 1: Place 4,523 on the chart. The 4 sits in the thousands column.
4×1,000=4,0004 \times 1{,}000 = 4{,}000
Step 2: Place 849 on the chart. The 8 sits in the hundreds column, the 4 sits in the tens column, and the 9 sits in the ones column.
4×10=404 \times 10 = 40
Step 3: Compare the two values of the digit 4.
4,000÷40=1004{,}000 \div 40 = 100
Answer: The 4 in 4,523 is worth 4,000, while the 4 in 849 is worth only 40. The same digit has 100 times the value when it sits in the thousands column instead of the tens column.

Why It Matters

Place value charts are a core tool in elementary math (grades 2–5) for building number sense, learning addition and subtraction with regrouping, and understanding decimals. Teachers use them to help students transition from concrete block models to abstract arithmetic. Strong place value skills also prepare students for later work with rounding, estimation, and scientific notation.

Common Mistakes

Mistake: Filling the chart from left to right and accidentally putting the first digit in the ones column.
Correction: Always start from the ones place on the right. Write the last digit in ones, the next-to-last in tens, and so on, or count the total digits first to identify the highest column needed.
Mistake: Skipping a column when the number contains a zero, such as writing 305 as only 3 and 5.
Correction: Zeros are placeholders and must occupy their column. In 305, the 0 belongs in the tens column to show there are zero tens.
