A number pattern is a list of numbers that follows a predictable rule, such as adding 3 each time or multiplying by 2. Once you find the rule, you can figure out what number comes next.
A number pattern is an ordered sequence of numbers in which each successive term is generated from the previous term (or terms) by a consistent operation or set of operations.
How It Works
To work with a number pattern, look at how each number relates to the one before it. Ask yourself: is the pattern adding, subtracting, multiplying, or dividing by the same amount? Once you identify the rule, apply it to the last number to predict what comes next. Some patterns use more than one operation, like "add 1, then add 2, then add 3," where the change itself grows.

Problem: Find the next two numbers in the pattern: 5, 10, 15, 20, __, __
Find the rule: Subtract each number from the one after it to see what changes.
Apply the rule: Each number is 5 more than the previous number. Add 5 to continue the pattern.
Answer: The next two numbers are 25 and 30.
Why It Matters
Recognizing number patterns builds the foundation for algebra, where you write rules as equations. Skip counting (2, 4, 6, 8...) is a number pattern that directly supports learning multiplication tables.
