Least Common Factor is not a standard math term, but if taken literally, it refers to the smallest factor that two or more whole numbers share — which is always 1. Most people searching for this term actually mean either the Greatest Common Factor (GCF) or the Least Common Multiple (LCM).

For any set of positive integers, the set of common factors always includes 1, and since 1 is the smallest positive integer, the least common factor is trivially 1 for every possible pair or group of whole numbers. The term has no practical use in mathematics.

How It Works

Every positive integer is divisible by 1, so 1 is a factor of every number. That makes 1 a common factor of any group of numbers. Since no positive integer is smaller than 1, the least (smallest) common factor is always 1.
