Halve — Definition, Formula & Examples

Halve means to divide a number into two equal parts. When you halve a number, you split it in half, which is the same as dividing by 2.

To halve a quantity is to multiply it by 12\frac{1}{2}, or equivalently, to divide it by 2, producing a result exactly half the original value.

Key Formula

half of n=n2\text{half of } n = \frac{n}{2}
Where:
  • nn = The number you want to halve

How It Works

To halve any number, divide it by 2. For even numbers like 8, this gives a whole number: 8÷2=48 \div 2 = 4. For odd numbers like 7, you get a decimal or fraction: 7÷2=3.57 \div 2 = 3.5. Halving is the opposite of doubling. If you double 6 to get 12, then halving 12 brings you back to 6.

Worked Example

Problem: A recipe calls for 16 cups of flour, but you only want to make half the recipe. How many cups of flour do you need?
Step 1: Halve means divide by 2.
16÷216 \div 2
Step 2: Perform the division.
16÷2=816 \div 2 = 8
Answer: You need 8 cups of flour.

Why It Matters

Halving shows up whenever you share something equally between two people or cut a recipe in half. It also builds a foundation for understanding fractions, since finding half of a number is your first step into working with 12\frac{1}{2}.

Common Mistakes

Mistake: Confusing halving with subtracting 2.
Correction: Halving means dividing by 2, not subtracting 2. Half of 10 is 5 (not 8).
