A fact family is a group of related math facts that use the same three numbers. For example, the numbers 3, 4, and 7 form a fact family with two addition facts and two subtraction facts.
A fact family is a set of equations—typically two addition equations and two subtraction equations, or two multiplication equations and two division equations—that relate the same three quantities, demonstrating the inverse relationship between the paired operations.
How It Works
Pick any three numbers where two of them combine to make the third. Write all the addition and subtraction sentences (or multiplication and division sentences) you can using those three numbers. You will always get exactly four facts. Recognizing a fact family helps you solve unknown equations quickly because if you know one fact, you automatically know the other three.
Worked Example
Problem: Write the complete fact family for the numbers 5, 8, and 13.
Step 1: Write the two addition facts using these numbers.
Step 2: Write the two subtraction facts by starting with the largest number.
Step 3: Check that every equation uses only the numbers 5, 8, and 13. All four do, so the fact family is complete.
Answer: The fact family is: 5 + 8 = 13, 8 + 5 = 13, 13 − 5 = 8, and 13 − 8 = 5.

Problem: Write the multiplication and division fact family for the numbers 4, 6, and 24.
Step 1: Write the two multiplication facts.
Step 2: Write the two division facts by starting with the product.
Step 3: Verify all four equations use only 4, 6, and 24. The fact family is complete.

Mistake: Mixing up which number goes first in the subtraction or division facts.
