24-Hour Clock — Definition, Formula & Examples

The 24-hour clock is a timekeeping system that counts all 24 hours of a day using the numbers 0 through 23, instead of repeating 1 through 12 twice with AM and PM.

A time-notation convention in which the day begins at 00:00 (midnight) and ends at 23:59, assigning each hour a unique two-digit number so that no AM/PM designation is needed to distinguish morning from afternoon or evening.

How It Works

On a 24-hour clock, midnight is written as 00:00 and the hours count up continuously: 01:00, 02:00, all the way to 12:00 (noon). After noon, instead of resetting to 1, the count keeps going — 13:00, 14:00, up to 23:00. To convert any PM time (after 12:00) to 24-hour format, add 12 to the hour. To convert a 24-hour time back to the 12-hour clock, subtract 12 from any hour greater than 12 and label it PM. The minutes and seconds stay the same in both systems.

Worked Example

Problem: Convert 3:45 PM to 24-hour clock time.
Step 1: Since the time is PM and after 12:00, add 12 to the hour.
3+12=153 + 12 = 15
Step 2: Keep the minutes the same.
Step 3: Write the result in 24-hour format.
15:4515{:}45
Answer: 3:45 PM is 15:45 on the 24-hour clock.

Another Example

Problem: Convert 21:10 from the 24-hour clock to the 12-hour clock.
Step 1: The hour is 21, which is greater than 12, so subtract 12.
2112=921 - 12 = 9
Step 2: Since the original hour was 13 or higher, label it PM. Keep the minutes unchanged.
Answer: 21:10 is 9:10 PM.

Why It Matters

Most countries outside the United States use the 24-hour clock on bus schedules, train timetables, and digital devices. Understanding it is essential when you travel internationally or read flight departure boards. In math courses on measurement and time, converting between 12-hour and 24-hour formats is a common skill tested on standardized exams.

Common Mistakes

Mistake: Adding 12 to 12:00 PM and writing 24:00.
Correction: 12:00 PM (noon) is already 12:00 on the 24-hour clock. Only add 12 to hours 1 through 11 when they are PM.
Mistake: Writing 12:30 AM as 12:30 in 24-hour time.
Correction: 12:30 AM is after midnight, so it becomes 00:30. Midnight resets the hour to 00, not 12.
